Quick answer: We didn't want to build another flap-clip mount for the A3 8Y. Most options on the market grip the vent flaps directly, which restricts airflow and risks the piano-black trim surround. We designed ours to insert into the vent cavity and grip the inner walls instead — the flaps never get touched.
The Audi A3 8Y has one of the more deliberate dashboard layouts in its class — the center vent and piano-black surround are a focal point, not just functional hardware. Most phone mounts treat that area like any other vent: clip on, done. We didn't think that was good enough for this platform.
The Problem With Flap-Clip Mounts
Most vent mounts on the market clamp directly onto the flaps — the thin blades that direct airflow. That works fine for cheap, universal vents, but it's the wrong approach for the A3 8Y: the flaps lose free movement, airflow gets restricted, and the clamping and unclamping motion during install and removal risks scratching the piano-black trim surround that sits right next to the vent opening.

Instead of clamping onto the flaps, our mount inserts into the vent opening and grips the inner vent walls — the rigid structure behind the flaps, not the flaps themselves. The flaps stay completely free to move, airflow is unaffected, and there's no clamping motion anywhere near the piano-black surround.
We added flocked protective pads on every interior contact surface, so there's no bare plastic-on-plastic contact and no adhesive of any kind. No glue residue, no risk to the trim finish, no permanent modification.
Why LHD and RHD Are Genuinely Different Products
Because the mount grips the inner vent structure rather than a universal flap clip, it has to be built specifically for the side it installs on. LHD cars use the vent to the right of the wheel; RHD cars use the vent to the left. Once fitted, the position can't be moved — only the holder angle tilts. We treat this as a real fitment distinction, not a footnote, which is also why we wrote a dedicated LHD vs. RHD installation guide rather than burying it in an FAQ.
Built for Your Exact Side
LHD and RHD versions are not interchangeable
Read the LHD/RHD Guide →Why a 17mm Ball Standard
The base mount uses the same 17mm ball joint across every holder configuration — standalone, MagSafe magnetic, MagSafe 15W or 25W charging, or mechanical. That means the part that's actually built for your vent never changes; only the holder on top does.
FAQ
Why not just make one universal mount for both sides?
The mount grips the actual vent structure rather than clamping onto flaps, so it has to be shaped specifically for the LHD or RHD vent opening.
Why no adhesive?
Adhesive risks marking the piano-black trim during removal. Flocked contact pads grip without glue or tape.
Does this affect HVAC airflow at all?
No — the flaps remain completely free to move since the mount never touches them.
