What’s Needed:
- MINI Shift Knob Extension Kit (includes base, extension, knob, and hardware)
- Basic tools (e.g., hex key, pry tool)
- Optional: strapping tape for added stability (1 x tape is included in the kit)
Step-by-Step Installation Instructions
1. Preparation
- Put the vehicle in N (Neutral)
- Engage the handbrake to prevent movement
2. Remove the Factory Gear Knob
- Pull the gear knob straight up to detach it from the stick
Note: A firm pull may be required. Use caution to avoid sudden release or injury.
3. Remove the Leather Dust Cover
- Gently pull the leather boot from its lower edge (near the gear indicators)
- Take care not to tear the leather
4. Disconnect the Wire Underneath
- Most automatic models have a signal wire beneath the dust cover (if not, skip to Step 5)
- Carefully disconnect this wire before continuing
5. Remove the Top Plastic Ring
- Remove the plastic retainer ring located on top of the shift stalk
6. Install the Base to the Dust Cover
- Push the base ring into the dust cover opening
It may feel tight due to the precision fit—this is normal
- You can use strapping tape if extra grip is needed
7. Mount the Base to the Gear Stick
- (If you disconnected the signal wire in Step 4) Reconnect the wiring under the dust cover
- Slide the base over the gear stick and align properly
- Tighten the bolts to secure the base
8. Attach the Extension and New Knob
- Screw the knob onto the extension component
- Screw the assembled parts onto the installed base
Installation Complete!
Double-check that:
- All components are securely tightened
- The shifter moves freely through all gears
- No wiring is pinched or loose
Pro Tip: The longer knob changes shift feel slightly—often preferred for comfort and reach. Especially beneficial for MINI Cooper S, JCW, and manual drivers.
