Installation Overview
The gear knob extension install consists of two main parts:
- Lower Component (gear shift housing)
- Upper Shifter Control Panel
Total time: ~15–20 minutes. Professional installation is recommended if you’re not confident with interior trim.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Step 1: Remove the Gear Shift Assembly from the Center Console
Gently lift and pull the full gear shift unit from your VW Golf’s center dashboard panel.
Step 2: Detach the Shifter Control Panel from the Lower Component
Use trim tools to unclip the 8 retention clips (4 per side) and lift the control panel away.
Step 3: Remove the Rubber Studs
Take out all 8 rubber studs from the lower housing and set them aside.
Step 4: Insert Screwdriver at a 45° Angle
Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the hole at a 45-degree angle toward the ignition button side (⚠️ not the opposite). This step is critical—avoid touching or damaging the circuit boards inside. Target only the locking point. Oneminibite is not liable for damage caused by incorrect handling; professional installation is recommended.
Step 5: Apply Leverage to Unlock the OEM Shifter
Once you feel resistance, pull the screwdriver backward toward the ignition to unlock the OEM knob.
Step 6: Remove OEM Shifter While Maintaining a 90° Angle
With the tool roughly perpendicular, gently pull out the OEM knob. No excessive force needed.
Step 7: Disassemble OEM Shifter Housing Carefully
Secure the base, unscrew the OEM cover, and preserve the lighting board and control PCB.
Step 8: Reinstall the Rubber Studs
Place the rubber studs (8 total) back into their slots on the lower frame.
Step 9: Reattach the Shifter Control Panel Cover
Snap the top panel cover back onto the control unit.
Step 10: Install the Premium Shift Knob onto the Shifter Base
Slide the new knob through the panel and align it with the OEM base.
Step 11: Secure the Knob to the Base
Tighten the knob with the provided screws for a solid and secure fit.
Step 12: Reconnect the Control Panel to the Lower Housing
Clip the 8 connectors back in place. ⚠️ Hold the assembly level to avoid dislodging the studs.
Step 13: Final Check – All Secure
Ensure everything is flush, tight, and responsive. Enjoy your upgraded drive.
