Installation Guide: VW Golf Sport Chrono Knob Upgrade
For Mk7/7.5 & Mk8/8.5 VW Golf Models
Overview
This upgrade has two main components that aren’t physically connected but communicate wirelessly:
- Sport Chrono Knob installed on the steering wheel
- Control Unit with three sets of wiring connections
Part 1: Installing the Sport Chrono Knob on the Steering Wheel

Step 1: Remove the Airbag
- Locate the airbag release near the bottom of the steering wheel.
- Rotate the lower part of the wheel upward to make installation easier.
- Tip: Use a small mirror (as shown in the image) to get a better view during this step.
Step 2: Remove the Center Trim
Carefully pry off the center trim from the steering wheel.
- Use the provided button mount to find and confirm the installation position.
- Mark the spot with the included sticker.
Step 3: Drill Mounting Holes
Drill three holes at the marked location: two smaller holes on the sides for screws and one larger center hole to pass wiring through.
Connect the three black wires from the kit to the Sport Chrono knob. Then secure the Sport Chrono knob to the drilled holes.
Step 4: Connect the Wiring
Unplug the wire harness behind the ACC control panel on the center trim.
Using splice connectors, attach the three black wires from the kit to the factory harness as follows:
- GND to factory ground wire
- B+ to factory constant power wire
- LIN to factory LIN wire
Note: The red wire attached to the Sport Chrono knob is an antenna and should be left unconnected.
Step 5: Reassemble the Steering Wheel
Neatly tuck away the wires to avoid pinching or rattling.
Reinstall the center trim and airbag securely.
Part 2: Control Unit Installation and WiringBefore starting, refer to the diagram provided below. It shows the complete layout for all connections in this upgrade. Keep it handy and refer back to it as needed while following the steps.
Step 1: Connect the Wires to the Control Box and Remove the Gear Shift Panel
Connect the necessary wires to the Control Box, then gently pry up and remove the gear shift panel to access the wiring and connectors underneath.
Start/Stop Button Wiring
Step 2:
Unplug the connector behind the Start/Stop button.
Locate pins 5 (purple) and 7 (purple/blue) on the 10-pin factory connector.
Connect the provided wires in Start/Stop Control (Refer to previous diagram) as follows:
- Black wire to pin 5 (purple)
- Brown wire to pin 7 (purple/blue)
Power Wiring
Step 3:
Find available constant power and ground wires under the shift panel.
Connect the Red: Constant power wire and Black: Ground wire (Refer to previous diagram) wires from the kit accordingly.
Gateway Module Wiring
Step 4:
Route the Gateway wiring adapter along with the two CAN-H and CAN-L wires through the center dashboard to the area beneath the steering column, where the Gateway module is located.
Step 5:
Locate the Gateway module with two wire harnesses attached (usually purple and green).
Remove the purple harness cover and identify pins 8 and 9 (use a multimeter if needed).
Connect:
- Orange/Green (CAN-H) to pin 9, Orange/Black (CAN-L) to pin 8 (Refer to previous diagram)
Tip: Splicing wires is recommended over plug connections for better reliability and safety.
Step 6:
Leave all other wires disconnected unless specifically mentioned in this guide.
Final Step: Secure Everything
- Carefully arrange and secure all wires and components to avoid rattles or interference.
- Reinstall all panels and parts firmly.
You’re ready! Enjoy your enhanced VW Golf steering wheel with authentic motorsport styling and improved control.
