Choosing Your Bar Size & Installing the MINI Magnetic Roof Rack

Roof bars and roof rack system for Mini Cooper R50, R52, and R53

Quick answer: Measure your roof's usable mounting width and match it to one of five sizes — Series 90 (85–90 cm) through Series 130 (125–135 cm). Choose one bar for light loads or two bars for roof boxes and heavier cargo. Installation takes a few minutes per side: position the bar, remove the protective cover so the magnet snaps into place, then tighten the anti-theft screws.

Choosing Your Size

Series Width Range
90 85–90 cm (33.4–35.4 in)
100 95–105 cm (37.4–41.3 in)
110 105–115 cm (41.3–45.2 in)
120 115–125 cm (45.2–49.2 in)
130 125–135 cm (49.2–53.1 in)

One Bar or Two?

A single bar works for lighter, evenly balanced loads. Two bars are the better choice for roof boxes and anything with more weight or length, since the second mounting point spreads the load and reduces flex at speed.

Installing It

1. Clean the roof thoroughly before mounting — dirt or grit under the magnet reduces holding strength.
2. Place the bar on the roof and adjust the length and position.
3. Remove the protective cover from one side; the magnet will snap into place. Repeat on the other side.
4. Tighten the anti-theft screws to lock the mount securely.

Pro tip: Lift to reposition rather than sliding the mount across the paint, and place a towel beneath the mounts during install as extra protection.

Removing It

1. Unscrew the anti-theft screws.
2. Use the included removal tool (or a small screwdriver) to lever the mount upward.
3. Immediately cover the mounting point with the protective cap before repeating on the other side.

Safety Notes Before You Drive

Do not exceed 70 mph (120 km/h) with the rack installed. Respect the dynamic (60 kg) and static (150 kg) load limits at all times. Not suitable for bicycles, boats, or canoes — airflow at speed can detach the system on bulkier cargo. The user is responsible for any damage caused by improper use or exceeding rated limits.

FAQ

What if my roof width falls between two sizes?
Choose the next size up for the most secure, evenly distributed fit.

Can I install this myself with no tools?
Yes — no drilling or specialized tools are needed; a small screwdriver covers the anti-theft screws and removal.

How do I clean the roof before installing?
A standard car wash and dry is sufficient — the goal is removing dirt and grit that could reduce magnetic contact.
